 Imparare l'arte dai maestri in Umbria

Gli studenti vengono qui da ogni parte del mondo ad imparare l’arte italiana perché vogliono respirarla con il profumo dei boschi e dei campi. Vogliono gustarla con i sapori e gli odori della cucina tradizionale e degli eccelsi vini locali. Vogliono vivere, muoversi e dormire in spazi armoniosi che raccontano storie secolari.

I corsi della Schola Artis Pro Vobis permettono questa totale immersione nella natura e nella cultura italiana perché si svolgono nel Castello di Giomici su un poggio che domina una valle ancora intatta, piena di verde e di silenzio.

Qui siamo arrivati un giovedì mattina percorrendo una lunga strada tortuosa che finiva proprio al castello.

Students from all over the world come here to study Italian art because they want to experience breathing it in with the scent of the woods and fields. They want to enjoy it with the flavors and smells of traditional cuisine and excellent local wines. They want to live, move and sleep in harmonious spaces that tell centuries-old stories.

The courses of the Pro Vobis School allow this total immersion in nature and Italian culture because they take place in the Giomici Castle on a hill overlooking a still intact valley, full of greenery and silence.

We arrived here on a Thursday morning along a long winding road that ended right at the castle.

  

 

Sotto le antiche travi di quella che un tempo era la stalla per i cavalli, Arnhild Kart aiutava Alex e Melinda nella difficile tecnica dell’acquerello. L’impegno non toglieva gioia al lavoro. 

Abbiamo visto le opere dei primi giorni ed era evidente il cammino verso la limpida affermazione dei propri stili personali. Arnhild non aveva imposto le proprie scelte stilistiche, ma esercitato una dolce maieutica per la realizzazione dei loro sogni. Eppure lei è una vera artista che crea poesie sulle tele e sui fogli, ma sa che la magia viene solo dal profondo dell’anima ed è lì che bisogna trovare la propria strada, da lì attingere per creare. È quello che fa un grande insegnante.

Below the ancient beams of what was once the stable, Arnhild Kart helped Alex and Melinda with the difficult technique of watercolor. The commitment did not take away the joy from the work.

We saw the works produced on the first days and the path towards the clear affirmation of each one's personal style was evident. Arnhild had not imposed her own stylistic choices, but exercised a gentle maieutics for the realization of their dreams. Yet she is a true artist who creates poems on canvas and paper, but she knows that magic only comes from the depths of soul, the inner place where you have to find your way, find where to tap into in order to create. That's what a great teacher does.

 

Un’altra studentessa, Sandra, stava imparando da Arnhild Kart la tecnica della scultura in carta e fil di ferro, umile tecnica, ma che permette una grande libertà espressiva. Sandra insegna scultura in una grande università californiana e crea opere di grande impatto e significato, ma questa tecnica le mancava ed è venuta a cercare chi, con questa tecnica, ha saputo rappresentare i grandi temi del vivere di oggi in forme di profonda intensa commozione.

Another student, Sandra, was learning from Arnhild Kart the technique of papier-mâché  and wire sculpting, a humble technique, but which allows great freedom of expression. Sandra teaches sculpture in a great Californian university and creates works of great impact and meaning, but she lacked this technique and came to look for someone who, with this technique, has been able to represent the great themes of today's life in forms of deep intense emotion.

 

Abbiamo anche assistito ad una lezione di mosaico con materiali appartenenti alla più antica tradizione, quella romana. Barbara Jo, etnografa e illustratrice archeologica presso l’Università di Harvard, sta intraprendendo una strada nuova ma che ha radici nella sua storia personale di studi del passato per avere un nuovo e insieme antico mezzo espressivo. La sua insegnante, Tiziana Mondini, la guida e l’aiuta a rendere duttile e aderente ai suoi scopi la complicata manipolazione delle tessere musive, dure e spigolose. Non è facile il ritratto che sta creando, ma a poco a poco esso sta prendendo volume ed espressione e un fascino remoto… 

We also attended a mosaic lesson with materials belonging to the most ancient tradition, the Roman one. Barbara Jo, an ethnographer and archaeological illustrator at Harvard University, is embarking on a new path that has roots in her personal history of past studies to have a means of expression at once ancient and new. Her teacher, Tiziana Mondini, guides her and helps her to make the complicated manipulation of the mosaic tiles, hard and angular, flexible and adherent to her purposes. The portrait being created is not easily done, but little by little it is gaining volume and expression and a remote charm...

Tiziana si è formata a Ravenna dove restano gli esempi più alti dei preziosissimi mosaici bizantini e ha una vasta competenza delle tante possibilità e materiali di questa tecnica. Ci ha anche mostrato come si fanno le tessere, un altro aspetto creativo.

Il pranzo non ci ha delusi e la buona tavola ha sciolto la timidezza e scatenato l’allegria.

Tiziana was trained in Ravenna where the highest examples of the most precious Byzantine mosaics remain and she has a vast knowledge of the many possibilities and materials of this technique. She also showed us how tesserae are made, another creative aspect.

Lunch did not disappoint us and good food dissolved shyness and unleashed gaiety.

 

 

Abbiamo voluto accompagnare il gruppo a Perugia allo Studio Moretti Caselli. Pur avendolo già visitato altre volte, siamo ancora rimasti stupiti dalla bellezza del museo, capsula del tempo ferma al XIX secolo in una costruzione del XV. Bravissimo Giorgio Panduri a raccontare e spiegare in un perfetto inglese la storia e le tecniche del grande fondatore Francesco Moretti, restauratore della immensa vetrata di San Domenico, nonché i tanti lavori eseguiti dai successori fino a quelli attuali ancora fedeli autori di vetri bellissimi. È qui che gli studenti Pro Vobis possono imparare a creare vetri artistici.

We were delighted to accompany the group to the Studio Moretti Caselli in Perugia. Although we  had already visited it, we were still amazed by the beauty of the museum, a 19th century time capsule in a 15th century building. Giorgio Panduri related and explained in perfect English the history and techniques of the great founder Francesco Moretti, restorer of the immense stained glass window of San Domenico, as well as the many works carried out by his successors up to the contemporary practitioners, still faithful authors of beautiful glass. This is where Pro Vobis students can learn how to make artistic glass.

Un giro per la Rocca Paolina che incute grande stupore e meraviglia e poi per Corso Vannucci, prezioso ed elegante fino alla meravigliosa Fontana, poi la pioggia ha imposto ai visitatori americani, sazi di bellezza, la partenza.

A tour of the Rocca Paolina inspired amazement and wonder succeeded by a walk along the elegant Corso Vannucci, to the marvellous Fountain, then the rain forced our American visitors, sated with beauty, to leave.

  

Un altro corso possibile è quello nella bottega di un famoso affrescatore (o “frescante” come scriveva il Vasari). Elvio Marchionni insegnerà i suoi segreti nella sua bottega a Spello, quella antica cittadina dove ogni vicolo è uno scrigno di bellezza e di armonia.

Chi vorrà imparare ad estrarre dalla pietra l’anima e il pensiero che vi si racchiude potrà accedere allo studio prestigioso degli Scultori Affiliati Peducci Savini ad Assisi, che lavorano lo stesso marmo in cui Michelangelo e Bernini lasciarono un segno sublime. La scuola offre anche corsi di scultura con altre tecniche, come la creta e il bronzo con i Maestri Francesco Tufo e Armando Moriconi, e le creazioni polimateriche di Arnhild Kart di cui vi abbiamo già raccontato.

I corsi d’Arte devono essere incentrati sulle tecniche. Ma un corso d’Arte in Italia non può prescindere da tante altre cose. La bellezza della sede, in primo luogo. Essere sempre immersi in un ambiente pieno di storia e di armonia circondato da paesaggi incantevoli e natura esuberante. In secondo luogo, la bontà e i profumi della cucina italiana con i suoi ingredienti sani e genuini nelle ricette della tradizione locale accompagnate da vini meravigliosi. In terzo luogo, la possibilità di vedere opere d’arte stupefacenti di cui la regione umbra è ricchissima. Infine, la qualità degli insegnanti che devono saper trasmettere le tecniche al massimo livello di competenza ma anche le vie perché queste tecniche possano piegarsi all’espressione più profonda dell’anima dell’artista.

È proprio quello che realizza la Schola Artis Pro Vobis.

Another course offered is that in the workshop of a famous fresco painter (or “frescante” as Vasari wrote). Elvio Marchionni will teach his secrets in his workshop in Spello, that ancient town where every alley is a treasure trove of beauty and harmony.

Those who want to learn how to extract the soul and the thought it contains from stone will have access to the prestigious studio of the Peducci Savini Affiliated Sculptors in Assisi, who work the same marble in which Michelangelo and Bernini left their sublime mark. The school also offers sculpture courses with other techniques, such as clay and bronze with the Masters Francesco Tufo and Armando Moriconi, and the multi-material creations of Arnhild Kart which we have already described.

Art courses must be focused on techniques. But an art course in Italy cannot ignore many other things. The beauty of the venue in the first place. Always to be immersed in an environment full of history and harmony surrounded by enchanting landscapes and exuberant nature. Secondly, the goodness and the aromas of Italian cuisine with its healthy and genuine ingredients in traditional local recipes accompanied by wonderful wines. Thirdly, the opportunity to see amazing works of art of which the Umbrian region is very rich. Finally, the quality of the teachers who must know how to transmit the techniques at the highest level of competence but also the ways these techniques can bend to the deepest expression of the artist's soul.

This is exactly what Schola Artis Pro Vobis achieves.
